In many of our roles you don’t need specialist skills or knowledge, we will provide you with all the training and support you will need. However, there some of our volunteering roles which require specific skills.

We require you to be a view good listener, open-minded, non-judgemental, and be able to work in a team.

This depends largely on the role you would like to volunteer in and the amount of training you will need.

You will need to complete an application form which you can access here. We will then contact you for an informal chat before proceeding with your application.

Much of the training is online but there are opportunities to join your local office and team in practice. We put the highest priority on ensuring that our team of volunteers is fully trained and up to date.

All advisers receive comprehensive, free, high quality training. This training may consist of working through study packs, either individually or as a group, face to face courses and observing advisers or other volunteers and staff in their roles.

Our normal working hours are between 9am and 5pm Monday-Friday, and most of our volunteering opportunities will be limited to these hours. If you’re only available in the evening or on weekends, there are a few volunteering roles you can apply for, such as fundraising, becoming a trustee and research and campaigns.

The minimum age for Citizens Advice volunteer advisers is 18, there is no upper age limit for volunteers. The minimum age to become a trustee is also 18.

If you are in receipt of benefits, including means-tested benefits, you are fully entitled to volunteer for as many hours as you wish, as long as you continue to keep to the rules or conditions for getting that benefit. For more information please click here

We recognise that some people will need more support than others and we offer additional help to enable people to reach their full potential.   We are focused on matching the individual to the right volunteering role, so please discuss your particular needs with us.
Every volunteer is supported by a named supervisor who will work with you to ensure that you are supported to achieve your true potential and that any issues identified are dealt with promptly.  You will be supported to undertake all the training relevant to your role.

We strive to ensure that premises and equipment are as accessible as possible.

Citizens Advice Broxbourne has a policy in place to ensure that people with criminal records are treated fairly. Having a criminal record is not, in itself, a barrier to volunteering. We consider each offence individually, looking at issues like risk to the client, how long ago it took place, the circumstances and whether they are relevant to the volunteer role. Anyone with an unspent offence for a sexual offence against a child or vulnerable adult is considered unsuitable to volunteer with Citizens Advice.

Many students (e.g. social policy and law) find CAB volunteering complements their course and provides them with valuable work skills your studies.
